“The Welsh Corgi is a small type of herding dog that originated in Wales. The name “corgi” is derived from the Welsh words “cor” and “ci”, meaning “dwarf” and “dog”, respectively. “. Wikipedia
There are two breeds of Welsh Corgi
The Cardigan corgi is the bigger of the two breeds. While they’re both about the same height (10-12 inches), the Cardigan can be up to eight pounds heavier. Male Cardigans, which are slightly bigger than females, weigh up to 38 pounds. Males Pembroke cardigans don’t usually get over 30 pounds.
Cardigans also have a wider range of coat colors. Pembrokes are limited to sable, red, and tricolor. Cardigan corgis, on the other hand, can be brindle, black and white with tan or brindle, blue merle, or red and sable with white.
The most obvious difference is Pembrokes have a closely docked tail while the Cardigan corgi keeps its tail.
Fun Corgi Facts
- The Welsh used the short dogs as herders as early as the 10th century. In those days, pastures were considered common land, so there were no fences. In order to keep a farmer’s cattle together and separated from other herds, corgis would nip at their legs to herd them.
- ACCORDING TO WELSH LEGEND, FAIRIES RIDE THEM.
- Queen Elizabeth II has had more than 30 corgis in her lifetime
