5 Guinea Pigs-The Lava Empire

by Robert Hudson
Katherine Bar has been keeping guinea pigs since 2012 and began this love affair when looking for the perfect apartment pet.

She has never looked back and loves her piggies!

Two Abyssinian and three American short hair make up the current family.

5 Guinea Pigs can be very affectionate depending on their personality- they love hand feeding, head scratches, and smooches, according to Katherine.

A playpen offers the piggies plenty of space to play, run and sleep. Their cage door is left open so they may go out any time they wish.
The Particulars of 5 Guinea Pigs

The Abyssinian is one of the oldest guinea pig breeds. The Abyssinian is set apart from other breeds of guinea pig by its coat, which is marked with radially growing swirls or cowlicks of hair referred to as rosettes.

American Shorthairs are, like their name suggests, shorthaired guinea pigs. Their short coat is smooth and is not curled. It is the most common breed and has many color patterns.
“Common health issues with females are definitely ovarian cysts- very common. They are also sensitive to respiratory issues and can get upper respiratory issues,” Katherine told me.
Consider this
Are you considering getting a guinea pig? You should consider the following:
- Like keeping other small mammals such as rodents and rabbits, it is important to keep the cage or any housing CLEAN. Any build up of waste will not only cause a stench, but can cause serious health problems and even death.
- Guinea pigs require a lot of daily care
- They have specific dietary needs and require lots of space.
- They are a social animal that thrives in a group. If solitary you should spend time with the animal every day to bond closely.
- They do require vet care- and at times may be expensive
