What Are Tea Cup Dogs?
by Robert Hudson
Teacup dogs are small dog breeds bred to be even smaller. This typically means at adulthood the dog will weigh four pounds or less, but there is no standard since they are not recognized as a breed.
It may happen naturally in a litter as the “runt”, but breeders who specialize in Teacups will pair together two undersize dogs. There have also been cases where amateur breeders have sold normal young puppies as teacups. Undersize dogs are prone to more serious health issues, so finding the right breeder is important. One example is Foufou Teacup Puppies.
Health issues include
- hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) which can result in seizures and death
- hydrocephalus (water on the brain)
- heart and respiratory problems
- bone fractures
- chronic stress
Teacups are fragile and more readily prone to injuries from falls and jumping, so you may want to consider this if you have young children. Another thing to consider is the smaller the dog, the smaller their bladder and the more frequent they need to go, making housebreaking more difficult. Most people use pee pads for the dogs entire life.
