Homer the Blind Cat was an Inspiration

By Angie Bailey
From the moment I picked up Homer’s Odyssey, the story of Homer the Blind Wonder Cat, I was inspired. This cat was fearless, full of spunk and reminded me that anything is possible when we see with our hearts and live in the moment.
I find I often look to my cats as role models for how to live a balanced, joyful life. They rest when they need rest, and get plenty of play and exercise as well. I think this is one of the reasons Homer was such a resilient little soul. Cats just “are,” and they’re a constant reminder for me to live in the present and truly enjoy each moment. This can sometimes be a challenge when we humans live by our calendars and commitments. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the day-to-day madness. Cats remind us to slow down and savor the moments. I’m much better off when I take their advice.

Sometimes as humans, we think about what we lack instead of our many gifts. I know this is true for me. Every once in a while I stop and remind myself life is too short to focus on what’s missing in my life. When it comes right down to it, life is what we make it — cats demonstrate this for us every day, and sweet Homer exemplified it. So despite challenges and constant battles with our human “monkey minds,” let’s all make an effort to live more like cats. My guess is we’ll all be happier, feel more balanced, and won’t care about what we thought was “missing.”
