Bernedoodle Coat Types

by Saad Ahmad

Bernedoodle is an incredibly cute mix of the Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle. Although they have not been around for a long time, but their popularity increases day by day depending upon their personality, energy, and friendly behavior. Their beautiful and unique coats are most notable. These are perfect for allergic people, as they are known as low-shedding to the non-shedding dog.

In fact, people also called them the non-shedding dogs due to their low to non-shedding features. In the traditional sense, the Bernedoodle don’t shed while you are brushing in their hairs. The low shedding features of this breed make them a very allergic-friendly dog. You don’t need to worry about the hairs all-around your house. The Bernedoodle coat types are one of the main factors of attraction by the people. Let’s see the different coat types of the Bernedoodle.

Different coat types of the Bernedoodle

Bernedoodle coats vary in thickness, consistency, and color. The first generation Bernedoodle coat is usually like Poodle, but sometimes they also have a coat just like the Bernese Mountain dog.  Many breeders also cross the Bernedoodle with other Bernedoodle to get more consistency and predictable traits. The thick coat of the Bernedoodles helps them survive during the winter and protects them from the summer heat. A Bernedoodle can have one of the three coat types, including the straight, wavy, and curly coat types.

Straight coat

The straight coat Bernedoodles are more shedding than the other coat types. Even the people call it a straight coat, there will be a slight curl to it. The length of the straight coat hairs mostly depends upon the length of their parent’s hairs. It’s not a common type of Bernedoodles; you may have seen the wavy and curly coat Bernedoodles, but not the straight hair Bernedoodles.

Wavy coat

It’s probably the most seen coat type of the Bernedoodles. The wavy coat is low to non-shedding, which makes it ideal for allergic people. It’s a free-flowing coat of the Bernedoodle, which often has a kinked or wavy appearance.

Curly Coat

It’s a most hypoallergenic coat type of the Bernedoodles, which shed least as compared to straight and wavy coat types. The curly coat of the Bernedoodles is much like the Poodle, with a tight and soft texture. Curly coat Bernedoodles shed upon themselves rather than shedding on your floor. So, you need to brush your curly coat Bernedoodle regularly and trimmed frequently to remove the free hairs from their coat. It’s the most suitable coat type of the Bernedoodles for allergic people. So, whenever you want to buy a dog, which sheds less, keep in mind that the curlier the coat, the less it’s going to shed.

Whenever you are going to choose less shedding coat types of the Bernedoodles, keep in mind that these dogs require proper maintenance to prevent the tangles. It’s recommended to brush your non-shedding dogs at least 2 to 3 times a week. Take them to the professional groomer every 6 to 8 weeks to keep their paws, eyes, and private areas well-maintained.
