5 Common Dog Health Problems.

Dogs are susceptible to several ailments that are relatively common and can easily be treated. Most of these conditions aren’t serious but can potentially cause fatal health complications if they go undetected and untreated. Some health issues are specific to certain breeds, such as breathing complications for flat-faced dogs, but others can affect any pooch. Here are five common health conditions you need to watch out for in your dog.
Parasites
Internal parasites (hookworms and roundworms), intestinal parasites (heartworms), and external parasites (fleas and ticks) are the most common parasites in dogs. While parasites can make your dog uncomfortable, some, like hookworms, can be fatal to puppies. Fleas are easy for your dogs to pick up but also easy to treat.
Talk to your vet about the most effective flea and tick treatment for dogs, which may include sprays, shampoos, or topical liquids. The best way to diagnose internal parasites is with a visit to your vet. Treatment depends on which kind of worm your dog has but typically includes an oral medication and follow-ups.
Skin infections
Skin infections often occur when a dog suffers from abrasion or scratch. This can cause inflammation, irritation, redness, or itching, resulting in a hot spot. A dog may develop skin infections for several reasons, including parasites and allergies. If you notice your dog is continuously scratching or chewing or its skin looks abnormal, visit your vet before your furry friend becomes downright miserable.
Arthritis
Arthritis is the inflammation of joints in the body. The most common form of arthritis in dogs is osteoarthritis which usually affects elderly dogs. This condition causes stiffness and pain, affecting your dog’s ability to exercise. Thankfully, the condition can typically be treated with physical therapy, medication, and homeopathic remedies. Consult your vet about the best option if you suspect your dog has osteoarthritis.
Ear infections
An ear infection is a very common health issue in dogs, and it often occurs when the lining of the outer part of the dog’s ear becomes inflamed or thickened. This condition can be extremely painful and uncomfortable and may need surgery to treat if left untreated. Ear infections can affect any dog, regardless of the breed or age, but it’s more likely to occur in long-eared dogs.
If you suspect your dog has any form of ear infection, speak to your vet as soon as possible. The earlier the proper treatment is started, the sooner your dog will get relief from pain and itching.
Dental disease
Approximately 80% of dogs will have a few symptoms of dental disease by the age of three. The most common form of dental disease in dogs is periodontal disease which often affects the structure that supports the teeth. Symptoms of periodontal disease include excessive drooling, difficulty chewing and swallowing, and bad breath.
While this condition can’t be treated, it can be managed to prevent it from getting worse. The most effective ways to prevent severe dental disease include regular teeth brushing and routine vet dental cleanings.
Endnote
Just like humans, dogs suffer from many common health problems. However, there is no reason to allow a treatable condition to cost you thousands of dollars or affect your dog’s quality of life. With a preventive care routine, regular visits to your vet, and a strong pet insurance cover, you can ensure your dog remains healthy.
