Scientists found an 18000 year old puppy frozen in the permafrost of Eastern Siberia, Russia in remarkable preservation. The fur, skeleton, teeth, head, lashes and whiskers are all intact.
Some scientists believe the dog evolved around 15,000 years ago from a now extinct specie of wolf, while others believe it dates back over 30,000 years ago. It is unclear if this pup is actually a wolf or an early form of dog. DNA tests are still being done to determine this.
Several extinct animals have been found in the thick permafrost: a male steppe bison, a woolly rhinoceros, a mummified pony and several mammoths.
